Perennial Questions, Innovative Responses: Policy, Ideology, and Evidence as Contested Terrain in the Research on Schools, Communities, and Society

The theme for the summer school has been chosen as a responsive and relevant opportunity for the dissemination of the significant body of postgraduate and early career research on language, learning and culture currently underway in colleges and universities, nationally and internationally.

We welcome proposal abstracts from novice and seasoned researchers working in qualitative, quantitative and hermeneutical research traditions in education, the social sciences and the arts and humanities, among other traditions. We would very much welcome paper proposals that look at policy, ideology and evidence “on the slant” and bring a creative, unanticipated, and different framing to the conference themes.

We hope that researchers will join with us in interrogating prevailing orthodoxies about the epistemological, ontological and ethical boundaries or gaps between ideology, policy and evidence, and how they are embedded educationally, socially, culturally and historically.

The IRMSS invitation is wide open to all researchers engaged in researching policy, ideology and evidence as contested terrain across qualitative, quantitative and hermeneutical traditions and disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary worldviews.

Our goal is to bring together researchers interested in pursuing the possibilities and potentials of research in new, different and alternative discursive and representational spaces and in the context of a memorable social, professional and residential community of practice.

Papers and posters at IRMSS 2018 will :

  • Explore policy, ideology and evidence as variables of social analysis.
  • Discusspolicy, ideology and evidence as troublesome knowledge that is counter-intuitive, alien and alternative to prevailing research orthodoxies.
  • Discuss policy, ideology and evidence as a variable of impact, influence and engagement in the public and policy spheres.
